“And in my own life, in my own small way, I’ve tried to give back to this country that has given me so much. That’s why I left a job at a law firm for a career in public service, working to empower young people to volunteer in their communities. Because I believe that each of us - no matter what our age or background or walk of life - each of us has something to contribute to the life of this nation.”
“I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by people around them. I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet strength and dignity.”
“My mother’s love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion, her intelligence reflected in my daughters.”
“One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don’t invest any energy in them, because I know who I am.”
Happy 48th Birthday, First Lady Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (b. January 17, 1964)

“If I die, I die”
- Adetoun Adetona at a protest against the fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria.
Occupy Nigeria began on Monday, January 2nd after President Goodluck Jonathan removed an 8 billion naira fuel subsidy to save the country money. This came with the promise that the money saved would be used to improve schools and healthcare.
The Nigerian government has a track record for abusing its funds. It’s been proven time and again that a significant portion of the money ends up in politician’s wallets instead of being used to help the people. So how are Nigerians supposed to believe their schools and health are really going to benefit from this change?
The fuel subsidy provided cheap fuel for the people but now one of the few benefits they received from the government is gone. To add insult to injury, the government claims it was done to fix problems that can obviously be solved by removing corruption from the system instead.
These protests speak to Nigerians’ ability to look past the religious and ethnic differences that have plagued the country for years and unite to speak with one voice.
I’m proud and I’ll continue to pray for my country.
